Octopus Watch is easy to install on your mobile devices. The setup once installed has been made as easy as possible to help you get up and running as soon as possible. If you need a helping hand, or if you run into issues, then this page is here to assist you with every step of the process.
Octopus Watch can be purchased on the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store. The app can run independently on iOS, iPadOS, WatchOS, and Android. Octopus Watch supports family sharing, so once the app is purchased you can install it on all your devices and all devices owned by your family members.
Want to set up Family Sharing on the Apple platform? Follow this link. Looking to set up Family Library on the Google platform? This link is for you.
At the moment, sharing of the subscription features is not possible on either the Apple or the Google platform. Apple has announced that Family Sharing of subscriptions is coming soon. Google has not made any such announcements yet.
Once the app is installed and opened, you are greeted with the setup screen. This screen allows you to log in using either a postcode or using your API credentials provided by Octopus Energy. The simple login, which only requires a postcode, is – surprise! – the easiest but cannot give you access your historic consumption data. Hence, most users opt for the API login. The table below lists the main difference and limitations of each login method.
Login Method | Simple Login | API Login |
---|---|---|
info required | postcode | API key, serial number, MPAN |
privacy | best | encrypted, stored on device |
smart meter | not needed | required |
Octopus Energy account | not needed | required |
shows consumption data | no | yes |
Only fill in the details for the login method you want to use. In particular, do not fill in the postcode if you decide to use the API login.
Provide your postcode to use the simple login. Tap the Validate button to verify your postcode and store it. Validation should only take a fraction of a second. As soon as your postcode is validated and stored the Rates tab becomes available.
To use this login method you need to collect some information from the API Dashboard on the Octopus Energy website. To do so, follows these four steps:
Your data is only stored on your device (and iCloud, if enabled). Furthermore, the data you entered is stored encrypted using modern standards to ensure the security of your credentials.
If you also have an export meter then Octopus Watch can retrieve your export data as well. To add your export meter first select your export tariff. Most users are on either the fixed export tariff (5.5p/kWh) or the Agile export tariff (variable p/kWh). Once you have selected an export tariff the app shows an extra input field. One of the fields is marked as your import MPAN and the other is marked as your export MPAN.
Be careful if you have an export meter. The MPAN listed on the Octopus Developer website could be either your import or your export MPAN.
To find your import and export MPAN log in to the Octopus Dashboard: https://octopus.energy/dashboard. Select Menu in the top left corner, then My account. Scroll down until you see a link titled Explore my energy use and click it. The page that opens lists your electricity and gas meters as well as their MPANs. Copy the MPAN of your import meter into the import meter MPAN box in the app, and the MPAN of your export meter into the export meter MPAN box.
Both the Rates and the History tab become available as soon as your API credentials are validated and stored.
My credentials cannot be validated! Octopus Watch can only store your credentials when it can validate that they are correct. In some cases this is not (yet) possible. A handy validation tool is available which can provide you quick and automated feedback to help you pinpoint the issue. You can access the validation tool by clicking here. If you have both import and export then enter your import MPAN first. If everything checks out then replace the MPAN with your export MPAN and let the validation tool run again.
